Trust Tairāwhiti invites the community to participate in the third annual Tairāwhiti Wellbeing Survey (TWS).
The survey is building comprehensive local data about how we’re doing as a region, and the wellbeing needs of our people. Respondents can complete the survey in English, Te Reo Māori and Tongan.
Data collected from the TWS is benchmarked against the Trust’s wellbeing framework, He Rangitapu He Tohu Ora and helps inform the Trust’s investment decisions and operations. It is also available as a free resource for local and national organisations and communities.
Data from the TWS has informed various projects and research for organisations like the New Zealand Treasury, Gisborne District Council, Manaaki Tairāwhiti, Te Whatu Ora, Kāinga Ora, New Zealand Institute of Economic Research, Wellbeing Alliance Aotearoa and Auckland University.
Peter Wilson, Principal Economist at the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research, says the survey’s capacity to capture people's experiences and measure the social impact of investments “really is world-class.”
After two years of running the TWS, emerging trends reveal key insights into the region’s life satisfaction, community connectedness, health, income, business opportunities and environmental perceptions.
Findings show that Te Reo Māori proficiency in Tairāwhiti far exceeds the national average, reflecting a strong cultural connection. Nearly three-quarters of respondents feel housing will remain unaffordable, highlighting a major concern. While opinions on employment and access to services are mixed, many report a strong sense of community, with social support well above the national average during tough times.
While Statistic NZs General Social Survey (NZGSS) collects similar data, its smaller sample size for Tairāwhiti doesn’t fully capture the region’s unique needs and perspectives.
Growing each year, the TWS provides a data foundation for improving the region’s long-term wellbeing. Responses are anonymous, ensuring privacy while informing decision-making that reflects the true needs of Tairāwhiti.
Locals are encouraged to visit the Trust Tairāwhiti marquee at the A&P Show this weekend to complete the survey, for a chance to win vouchers for local tourism businesses.
The survey takes about 10 to 15 minutes complete, it is now live on Tairāwhitidata.nz.
