Hikurangi Maunga Dawn Ceremony

Mt. Hikurangi, Ruatōrea
Begin the year with an experience grounded in tikanga on Maunga Hikurangi. The ceremony includes karanga, karakia, haka, waiata and a kōrero that honours our tīpuna and the stories carved into the pou.

Fire in the Sky
1 January 2026
Marina Park, Gisborne
Celebrate the first evening of the year at Fire in the Sky. Live entertainment, vendors and activities by the river create a whānau-friendly vibe. The event ends with the iconic fireworks display that has wowed locals and visitors for years.
Ngāti Porou Pā Wars
3 January 2026
Whakarua Park, Ruatōrea
Pā Wars is a highlight on the iwi calendar, bringing Ngāti Porou uri together for a full day celebrating whakapapa, whanaungatanga and friendly inter-marae competition. From sports events to wearable arts, chess and line dancing, Pā wars offers plenty of ways for the whole whānau to get involved.
The National Surfing Championships 2026
11 – 17 January 2026

Gisborne will host the 2026 National Surfing Championships, welcoming more than 350 athletes and 400 support crew. Competitors range in age from under 14s to over 70s, making it a showcase of talent across generations. Hosting the event in Tairāwhiti reinforces the region’s reputation as a world-class surfing destination.
First Light Marathon

Start and finish at the boardwalk next to Midway Surf Club
The First Light Marathon is returning to Tairāwhiti, inviting runners to take on a scenic route around the region. The course follows Gisborne’s coastline, offering striking views along the way. Participants can also sign up for the full five-day programme featuring a pōwhiri, local activities and a celebration dinner to round out the event.
St. Mary’s Memorial Church Centenary Commemoration

St. Mary’s Memorial Church, Tikitiki
St. Mary’s Memorial Church in Tikitiki will mark 100 years since its dedication. The church is renowned for its beautiful design and deep cultural significance, built to honour Ngāti Porou soldiers who served in World War I and later expanded to commemorate those who served in World War II.
Hohou te Rongo exhibition

Tairāwhiti Museum
Hohou te Rongo explores the 1865 siege of Waerenga-a-Hika and its lasting influence on the region. Historic taonga are displayed alongside contemporary works that offer fresh perspectives. The exhibition creates space for learning, reflection and healing kōrero about the 1865 battle.
D1NZ National Drifting Championship
20 – 22 March 2026
H Blackbee Drift Park (Dunstan Road)
GRIT Motorsport Limited will bring the D1NZ National Drifting Championship to the region, showcasing top-level motorsport. The event is expected to draw competitors and spectators from across Aotearoa and overseas, bringing increased activity and visitation to the region.
