The Trust has approved $54,500 in feasibility funding to support establishing a Regional Film Office (RFO) in Tairāwhiti, with the aim of attracting film industry opportunities and sector growth locally.
Film industry consultants Michael Brook and Matthew Horrocks have been engaged to develop a Screen Tairāwhiti RFO business case. Both have significant expertise in managing film offices, governance and economic development and will draw from this experience to explore the opportunity to establish an RFO in Tairāwhiti and assess possible entity structures, setting the stage for formal recognition with the Regional Film Office of New Zealand (RFONZ).
Local screen producer and director Tee Wells initiated an interim RFO for Tairāwhiti in 2021 and says transitioning to full membership with RFONZ would unlock opportunities nationally and abroad to promote the region as open for business in film.
“We’re only entitled to so much as an interim office. Once recognised as a full member of the RFONZ collective, large-scale film opportunities will be put on the table in front of us, for which we can raise our hands. We'll have access to broader film association networks.”
Reflecting on the production of the local film Whale Rider, Tee highlighted the potential benefits for Tairāwhiti, discussing how becoming a full RFO can boost the area’s economic, cultural and tourism sectors.
“In the film industry, time is money, so production companies must tap into local businesses for materials, catering and props.
“I had many friends and whānau involved in the film Whale Rider who said it was a great experience to be part of. Big films like that require local participation and knowledge.”
RFOs around the country have contributed to producing many large-scale films, including Mulan, King Kong and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
The business case is due for completion by the end of December 2024. Once completed, Tee will lead in gaining regional endorsement to have Screen Tairāwhiti recognised as a full RFO.
